Explore an area rich in history with a Pueblo Tribal member and take in the panoramic views of the landmarks on famous Route 66. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime excursion full of majestic scenery and magical moments.
DAY 1 Your excursion begins with transportation to Baltimore/Washington International Airport to board a flight to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a local guide who will lead you by motorcoach to your hotel for the next 4 nights, the Marriott Albuquerque (505-881-6800) conveniently located in the heart of downtown with spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains and the desert. The hotel features an indoor/outdoor pool and sauna, fitness center, and Cielo Sanida featuring American cuisine. In-room amenities include coffee makers, irons and ironing boards and hairdryers. Following check-in, a special Welcome Dinner will be included while the remainder of the evening is yours to relax and unwind.
DAY 2 Breakfast will be included at the hotel before departing early morning for the Mass Ascension at the International Balloon Fiesta. Greeted by the crisp morning air, witness the awe-inspiring ascension of these colorful giants as they paint the sky with a kaleidoscope of colors and whimsical shapes. What began in 1972 with 13 balloons launching from a shopping mall parking lot, Balloon Fiesta has grown into a veritable moving picture show featuring hundreds of obscure shapes and sizes sailing silently through the air. Become part of the action as you spend the morning talking with the pilots and crews, as well as leisurely exploring the park grounds which includes a myriad of souvenir and food vendors and spans nearly 365 acres. Next, board the motorcoach, sit back and relax during a sightseeing adventure along historic Route 66. Commonly referred to as “The Mother Road” or “The Main Street of America”, Route 66 is 2,448 miles in length stretching from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. While on your driving tour, a stop will be made at the Turquoise Museum which features one of the largest private collections of turquoise in the world. See one-of-a-kind showpieces and samples from more than 60 mines on four continents. Learn the difference between real turquoise and plastic and much more. Our day continues with a walking tour of the historic Old Town which was the original center of Albuquerque founded in the 18th century. A maze of cobbled courtyard walkways leading to hidden patios and gardens, the Plaza area of Old Town features many galleries and shops. Lunch will be included while in Old Town as well as some time to browse and shop in the downtown. Upon late afternoon return to the hotel, dinner will be on your own with restaurants and shopping adjacent to property.
DAY 3 Following breakfast included at the hotel, travel to Santa Fe via the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. Travel through mining towns that once mined precious stones and rich ores. Upon arrival in Sante Fe, New Mexico, see the San Miguel Mission built by Native American Slaves and completed in 1625. It was nearly destroyed during the Pueblo revolt of 1680. In 1710 the Spanish once again took control of Santa Fe and rebuilt the San Miguel Mission which today still contains a bell that dates back to the early 1300’s. Also along the way, view the Loretto Chapel known for its unusual helix shaped spiral staircase otherwise known as the “Miraculous Stair”. Lunch will be included during the tour, as well as some free time for shopping in the historic square. Return to Albuquerque for the Balloon Glow at dusk. A truly unique experience awaits you, as the evening will be spent at the Gondola Club which enables you to escape the crowds in order to hear the thrilling roar of hundreds of burners simultaneously igniting, turning the Park into a magical, lighted canvas full of color. A buffet dinner will be included while at the Gondola Club. The evening will be topped off with an “After Glow” festive fireworks display. Return to the hotel after the fireworks to rest after a busy day of touring.
DAY 4 Breakfast is included at the hotel before departing for Sandia Peak where you will be transported above deep canyons and breathtaking terrain some two miles high on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway. Some of nature’s most dramatic and breathtaking scenery unfolds before your very eyes. Next, depart for the city of Acoma Pueblo, also known as the “Sky City”, located in the spectacular West-Central Plateau of New Mexico. Acoma Pueblo is built atop a sheer-walled, 367-foot sandstone bluff, above the desert floor in a valley studded with sacred, towering monoliths. Settled and built around AD1100, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities within the United States borders. Lunch will be included before meeting up with a Pueblo Tribal member who will lead the group on a guided tour of the village. Learn about the culture and history, as well as their economy which is based on agriculture and trade. Next, return to the hotel where a Farewell Dinner is included on the last evening in Albuquerque.
DAY 5 Following breakfast included at the hotel, depart for the Pueblo Indian Culture Center where admission is included and allows in-depth exploration of the Native American culture through their exhibit “Our Land, Our Culture, Our Story”, the contemporary arts and crafts section and the mini-theatre featuring short films about the life and art forms of two distinguished Pueblo women. Following the tour, depart for the airport and bid farewell to Albuquerque en route back to Baltimore/Washington International Airport.
